Arsenal have continued their aggressive summer recruitment drive, reaching nearly £100 million in spending with the acquisition of Mikel Merino, according to Talksport.

The 28-year-old midfielder has joined the Premier League side from Real Sociedad for a reported £32 million.

Merino has signed a four-year contract with Arsenal, which includes an option for an additional year.

This move marks his return to the English top flight after previously playing at Newcastle United during the 2017/18 season. The transfer saga has been one of the most drawn-out deals of the summer window.

Arsenal began pursuing Merino at the start of August, having monitored his performances throughout the year.

Sociedad initially held firm on their £30 million asking price, but Arsenal's persistence ultimately secured the deal.

Merino, who was instrumental in Spain’s Euro 2024 triumph, was keen on joining Arsenal despite interest from other major clubs like Barcelona and Atletico Madrid.

He has been assigned the number 23 shirt at his new club.

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said on the signing: “Mikel is a player who will bring us huge quality with his experience and versatility.

He has played at the top of the game at both club and international levels for a number of seasons now.

Arteta also highlighted Merino’s winning mentality, noting his impressive performances at Euro 2024. “We are delighted to welcome Mikel and his family to the club and can’t wait to start working with him,” Arteta added.

With Merino’s arrival, Arsenal's summer spending has reached approximately £97 million.

This total includes the signing of versatile Italian defender Riccardo Calafiori from Bologna for £38 million, and the permanent acquisition of David Raya from Brentford for £27 million.

Merino’s potential debut could come against Brighton this Saturday, possibly leading Arteta to adjust his midfield setup.

Declan Rice might shift from his left-sided role to his preferred defensive position, allowing Merino to play a more dynamic box-to-box role.

This adjustment could see Thomas Partey relegated to the bench, with Rice anchoring the midfield.
